Thrifty Florist May 31st will be Memorial Day and while there will be parades, barbeques and other activates, the real reason for this day is honor those military persons that have fought to protect our freedoms. Officially named a federal holiday in 1971, Memorial Day was in earlier years referred to as Decoration Day and started after the Civil War. At that time people were holding tributes to the thousands of fallen American Soldiers that died in the Civil War. The tradition was to decorate graves with beautiful flowers and recite prayers. Today, in addition to visiting memorials, people attend or participate in parades and have family gatherings. There are many ways to reflect on our fallen heroes, including ceremonies, celebrations, and festive occasions that focus on patriotism and how much we value the freedom that we hold dear.
