Thrifty Florist

Sixteen Floral Design Centers To Serve You

Thrifty Florist is a family owned and operated floral design firm. Since starting business in 1989, Thrifty Florist has blossomed under the direction of CEO and Owner, Chris Rea, to include 16 locations throughout metro Detroit and surrounding areas. It is Michigan’s largest retail florist and one of the nations leading retailers of flowers and related floral gifts.

We offer beautiful, farm fresh flowers, plants and occasion themed gifts. Our floral design team is one of the best in the state of Michigan. We offer free floral consultations for customers seeking to have our team handle floral design and decorating for their home or office.

The first store was started on the Westside of Detroit at the corner of Grand River and Telegraph Road. We started by bringing in flowers by the truckload and selling them at unbeatable prices. We eliminated the middleman and passed the savings on to our customers.

When we bypassed the middleman, we found that we were selling fresher flowers than other florists in town; and much to our surprise, our flowers were even fresher than the local wholesalers in town. Customers, to this day, come in and comment about the freshness.

Our stores are customer-focused and customer-friendly. We offer quality products at affordable prices situated in convenient locations at major intersections across the Metro area. Accessibility and convenience are important to Thrifty customers, that is why our stores are open before rush hour until bedtime; even on most major holidays, including Christmas.

This Veterans Day send flowers, gourmet gift or fruit baskets from Thrifty Florist to honor a special Veteran on this holiday!

Veterans Day

The brave men and women who have and who are currently standing to protect our freedoms,  are honored on Veterans Day celebrated on November 11th.  On this day in 1918 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, all major hostilities of World War I were formally ended.  The day was originally termed Armistice Day and was created to celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans. President Woodrow Wilson gave an eloquent speech in 1919 during which he  commended the men and women of the United States military.

Quoting a brief excerpt from President Wilson’s  speech he said “To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations”.

In some countries, Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are celebrated in honor to the end of World War I. However in 1954, Veterans Day became the official name for our United States day to honor our military men and women. Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day. While both days honor our military, Memorial Day is designated to honor those who died while fighting for our country. Veterans Day is designated to honor all of the military folks who have served our country.

Spelled sometimes as Veteran’s or Veterans’ Day, in reality there is no apostrophe. The day is designated to honor all military veterans. Therefore the singular meaning denoted by an apostrophe does not apply. On this special day why not send a delicious basket of sweets from Thrifty Florist to that special veteran in your life. It will mean so much to them that you took the time to recognize the sacrifices they made in defending our great Nation!

There are numerous ways you can do that make a veteran feel like every sacrifice he or she gave to our great country is appreciated. I remember a few years back I lived across the street from a couple in their mid eighties. The man always proudly wore a Navy Veteran baseball hat. One Veterans Day I went by the bakery and picked up a small cake that said Happy Veterans Day. They were so very appreciative. Problem was the lady kept bringing food over to my house after that for a while. Sweet but she tended to way overcook stuff.

If  you are looking for some other things you can do for a veteran, after a little research below are just a few ideas:

  • Donate Money – There are several organizations that support veterans and they can always use private donations.
  • Donate frequent-flyer miles – For any of us that travel a lot for work or pleasure, perhaps you have accumulated some extra travel miles that you may not use. One organization that would love the free flyer miles is the Fisher House Foundation Hero Miles Program. They are dedicated to assisting family members with travel expenses so that they can be close to their loved one who may be ill or injured.
  • Volunteer your skills – If you have knowledge of a trade or financial planning etc., veterans can benefit from your volunteer teaching.
  • Veteran Speaker – Many veterans have wonderful and inspirational stories of over coming adversity and never giving up. Find one that enjoys speaking to other veterans.
  • Hire a veteran – If you own a small business or are in a hiring position at a company, perhaps hire a veteran who is anxious to get out into the working world.
  • Hire a veteran’s caregiver – Offering support to veteran’s families is so valuable. Plus many of these folks are incredible employees.
  • Do business with a veteran-owned company – Astonishingly there are an estimated 27 million veteran owned small businesses in the U.S. These companies are run by the fine men and women that defended our country. You will find some of the most trustworthy services and quality products.

Our gifted and professional floral designers at Thrifty Florist are ready to assist you with a gift basket or flower arrangement for this Veterans Day.
